The Power of Now..

printscreen source: Ms. Reyes' Instagram post
I know this is not the right time for me to update this blog.  Albeit the exit conference had just been concluded, humongous tasks are yet to be done, e.g., finish the annual audit report and organize working papers (agencies of both my regular and special assignments), among others.

It is just that, I could not resist featuring immediately in my blog of what I have been pondering on since I read it from the post of Christine Reyes in her Instagram account just yesterday.  What I was referring about was what I think to be an excerpt of The Power of Now book, quoted below:
"So many of us have acquired and taught of the notion that happiness is a destination that we must work and pay with our bodies hours of work to live and acquire unnecessary material desires that we must work hard for the future with our reward always just around the corner or just up the next step.  Everything was for tomorrow but never came.  Then we realize we never really lived at all.  We are all trained to be racing all the time.  Everything was for the future.  Why wait?  When we can be truly be at peace right now?  Why wait to be forgiven?  When we can forgive now?  Why wait then to be happy?  To be with each other?  And to be alive?  Right now is the best time to love, to forgive, to be with loved ones. To be alive.  Nobody in human history has ever in a death bed and requested to see their diplomas, cars, money or accomplishments one last time!  We always ask to see people for our last request.  Embrace.. Kiss them now.  Your true power is NOW."
Agree? ;)

My Samsung Galaxy Note 3!

Oopps! I did it again..

It's been almost three months had passed and I still could not believe that I, again, allowed myself to indulge in what I call as, "a taste of a lavish lifestyle".  And every time I take a look at my credit card bill, my heart still palpitates.. :(

Well, I just consoled my frugal me that I guess I deserve a treat once in a while.  And the best of it all is that I do not have any regrets with my decision.  In fact, I am enjoying my new phone! ;)

The sad part, however, was, I was not able to avail of the promo for the discounted S View Flip Cover.  Samsung's store outlet in SM Megamall did not have any stocks when I purchased my phone then.  I finally bought my S View Flip Cover at SM North just last month, only after I squeezed myself through Christmas traffic in going to SM MOA and found out that they were out of stocks. :(

But that's okay.  I just wish I had more extra time to explore my Samsung Galaxy Note 3..

Looking Forward to My Magical Christmas Treat!

It's been five years since I last watched a live magical show.  It was the Wanders of PAGCOR which up to this day, I could still recall how the child in me was so mesmerized with those amazing acrobatics being executed by the international and local performers alike.  If given the chance, I would want to watch it all over again.  But then, it is no longer possible.  Wanders had wandered off somewhere. :(

Well, here's the good news!  The internationally-acclaimed Circus Vargas troupe, one of the world's biggest travelling circuses, will be arriving in Manila!  This extravaganza of magical proportions will be held at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City and will run from December 25, 2013 to January 1, 2014.

What to expect?  Well, I was told that, Circus Vargas will be showcasing a gravity-defying flights, flashy costumes, fun dance routines, and other deliriously delightful antics, among others!  Also, charismatic illusionist Patrick Gable will be performing his mystifying illusions that are guaranteed to impress, astound, and make everyone in the whole family a believer of MagiKaria.  Who is Patrick Gable and what is MagiKaria all about?  There's only one way to find out, that is, to watch the show!

Are you excited as I am?  So, what are you waiting for?  Tickets are now available at SM Tickets, SM Cinema, and Snack Time outlets.  For inquiries, call Tropical Productions, Inc. at telephone no. 519-8984, or email info@tpiguam.com, or visit www.circusvargas.com.

My First #Blogapalooza Experience

It has been almost a month now since I attended my first ever #Blogapalooza experience at SM Aura Convention Center.  Until now, I seem to have not gotten over it, not to mention the fact that I have been haunted with loads of information and freebies that I took home that night.  In fact, I am so much looking forward to attending the succeeding Blogapalooza events, if given the chance..

my passport to the world of opportunities
I could still remember that I started my day on November 16, 2013 with getting myself ready for the event.  I was running late already and I decided not to avail of the GrabTaxi promo as I was just less than 10 minutes from the venue then.  Too bad, I would have been able to experience this innovative way of taking damsel-in-distress (especially!) out from those too long taxi queues in the metro.  Good thing, I have their app installed in my smartphone as I might find the need to use it sometime soon.
my soft gel nail polish
I believe I was one of the first few bloggers who arrived early at the event as I was the second lucky gal to get pampered of a soft gel nail polish treatment from Lulu Nails and Dry Bar.  I swear, my pussy red-color nail polish lasted for almost three weeks!  And I must say, while I was having my nails done, Mikey Bustos passed by and gave me his sweetest smile.  Donning an angel costume, he said he just had a fight with Satan. Hehehe!

Food and drinks were practically overflowing that day.  While I was still drinking a cup of coffee from the famous Figaro coffee shop, I was offered to taste the slimming Nice Day coffee.  I got to taste two different coffee varieties in a day!  What more, I took home with me a Brownbag fresh hand crafted coffee, which by the way, is so aromatic that I got used to smelling it every now and then.

i should have filled up this plate to the brim. lol!
And as if that was not enough, I gulped on a wheatgrass juice which, surprisingly, tasted yummy.  I later learned that I drank the honey flavor.  I also got to munch on delectable foodies from Plato Wraps, Chef's Noodles, Hungry Juan,  Gavino's DonutsChooks to Go, and of course, lunch courtesy of Flavours of China.

I was fortunate also to try a machine from N.Y. Theraspine which vibrating motion stimulates healthy body.  Accordingly, only two of said machines can be found in the country - one in St. Lukes Hospital and the other, in N.Y. Theraspine.

The Mind Museum at the event also offered trivia games.  Although I was not able to give the right answer, still I was happy enough.  I will be visiting The Mind Museum soon, courtesy of The Mind Museum! ;)

I'm also excited to use the discount coupons and membership card distributed by enjoy philippines.  I just  wished I had won their trip to boracay giveaway. :(

Megaworld, Gurkka, Fujidenzo, PRC, Inc., Slenda, Lazerxtreme, RichPrime Global, Inc., among others, gave also their share of freebies.  Many thanks to them!

Lastly, embarrassing at it may seem, I admit, I learned to use Twitter because of Blogapalooza.  Thanks to the organizer, wheninmanila.com, for giving me the opportunity to get encouraged (special mention to the speakers) in honing more of my blogging skills.  Congratulations on your successful endeavor and more power! :)

kudos and thanks to you, Vince!

Secrets of Mona Lisa

Source: The Mind Museum
Mona Lisa has been a significant part of my childhood memories not because it is a work of art but because, for me, it was a familiar song, which my father usually hummed - whether to put me and my siblings to sleep or just to entertain everybody at home.  I later learned that the song stemmed from the mystery behind the portrait created by Leonardo da Vinci - an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer.

A number of scholars have been trying to uncover the controversy surrounding not just the famous smile of the subject but the entirety of the painting as well.  And that was enough to trigger my curiousity.  Since Mona Lisa was painted by a genius, could it be that there is a scientific explanation for every detail, e.g., for every brush stroke of that enigmatic piece of art?

If given the chance, I would have loved to visit the Louvre Museum in Paris and see the portrait myself.  But then, that would not be financially feasible at present.  Then I thought to myself, why would I just visit the Mind Museum in Taguig?  I was informed that there is an eye-opening, in-depth analysis of "The Secrets of Mona Lisa" that started its three-month run last September 1 and will end on November 30, 2013.

This is a mind-blowing experience that I will never miss for the world.  Wanna care to join me?  Then, perhaps we start our journey here.

And I'm Invited!!!

I could not believe it!  My blog was one of the first 150 blogs lucky enough to be invited to an exciting event!

Lots of surprises and entertainment await fellow bloggers and businesses who will be attending the Blogapalooza 2013 on November 16, 2013 at SMX Aura.  In fact, one of the early perks is that one can get a "cash back refund" on a cab ride to Blogapalooza just by properly following the step-by-step instructions provided.  Isn't that a treat?!

Blogapalooza is essentially a "B2B" - Business to Blogger networking event.  It's a link between big and small businesses who have something cool to share and the online community of people who love to share.

So, what are you waiting for?!  If interested, sign up on or before 5pm tomorrow, November 15, 2013.   For questions, tweet @Vince Golangco or email Vince@WhenInManila.com.

Gear Up Your Note 3 Promo, a hoax?

I made a quick trip to SM North yesterday during lunch break and due to limited time, I proceeded directly to Samsung shop and immediately inquired on the Gear Up Your Note 3 promo which was posted on Facebook.

I was disappointed however when the salesgirl I talked to had no idea whatsoever on what I was inquiring about.  And when I checked Facebook post again this morning, there was one comment which also shared the same sentiment.  And going back to the mechanics of the promo quoted below:
2. This promo is available in all Samsung authorized stores nationwide.
something must have gone wrong somewhere, which prospective buyers like me are left confused and frustrated.I hope Samsung will do something to correct this inconsistency before October 28, 2013.

FYI, Samsung  is also offering free 6-month accidental phone damage coverage for those who are going to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on or before October 28, 2013.  Thus, buyers who are interested to avail both promos should get their credit cards ready on or before such date.

And by the way, speaking of credit cards, BPI and BDO are offering their credit card holders a "buy now, pay next year" scheme.  That means, payment will be deferred next year yet.  Isn't that, great?

But then, Samsung must fix the Gear Up Your Note 3 promo first. :(

I'm Falling In Love With N3..

At first, I got hooked up with Samsung Galaxy S4.  Then suddenly, my eyes shifted to Sony Xperia Z1.  And now, I'm beginning to fall in love for Samsung Galaxy Note 3...

(For brevity, I'll be referring to Samsung Galaxy Note 3 as N3 in this post)

I can't help it.  I  admit, I got tired waiting for Sony Xperia Z1.  And to make matters worse, all I see were advertisements screaming for N3. :(

Just last month, I was not totally sold out for this product.  I'm not actually impressed with its stylus pen considering that I had one attached to my old phone before and due to the inconvenience of taking the time to take it out, I rarely, if not never, bothered to use it at all.  And I've also read reviews that there are complaints of the stylus pen's delayed response which is a big turn off for me as I am a certified impatient freak.

But then, reviews also disclosed that N3 is an improved version of Samsung Galaxy S4 (e.g., battery life, speed, etc).  And accordingly, N3 is the best phablet so far, even surpassing most of the features and specifications of Iphone 5S.

What holds me back however from buying N3 is that, it is too expensive.  Even review authors acknowledged that sad fact, too.  Because of that, I am forced to think on it a hundred times over.  And I'm wondering if it is still practical for me to invest on N3 considering that I am always on the go and might not have enough time to explore and enjoy it at all.

To whom it may concern, please help me decide by leaving your comments below.. ;)

Speaking of the... Z1!

Finally, Z1 is coming!

According to Sony Mobile Philippines' Facebook post (3 hours ago as of this writing), Sony Xperia Z1 will be available in stores nine days from now.  I'm getting excited!  Sad to say, I'm not as excited as I was before..

Z1 turns out to be cheaper than Samsung Galaxy Note 3 by P2,000 (USD46.51 at USD43 exchange rate).  To make the phone appealing, freebies and discounts might probably be offered on its launching day.  I guess I better decide now whether to grab the phone or learn again the lesson that I got from not taking the chance of purchasing the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 upon its launching, which by the way, could have saved me by as much as P4,000 (USD93.02).

Nonetheless, I have nine days to think about it..

The Waiting Game..

Finally, I was able to visit SM Aura for the very 1st time.  The mall, by the way, is just a few minutes away from where I live.   If not for their 3-day sale which started last October 4 and ended today, October 6, I would have deferred my trip to some other weekend.  I was disappointed however when only a few of the high-end shops in there participated in what I term as "over 50% off" sale.  Nonetheless, my visit was not put in vain when I learned that Sony has a branch at the 4th floor of the mall.  I thought to myself, maybe this would be my chance to buy my most long-awaited phone...

I somehow expected to find a display of Sony Xperia Z1 at their store.  But then I already know that, that possibility would be remote considering that I heard nothing of any news of the recent launching of the latest product of Sony Xperia here in Metro Manila.  True enough, the salesman told me that the phone is not yet available.  To my dismay, I would have to wait for 1st week of November or perhaps on the 2nd week or who knows when.

I admit I'm getting tired of waiting.  I read from an internet article that Sony Xperia Z1 would be available here in the Philippines within the month of October.  It was already launched in Singapore last October 4 and earlier in Malaysia.  If Sony would have to postpone its launching here in the country, I'm afraid I might lose my appetite for the phone and probably shift my attention somewhere..

Sunday, September 22, 2013

And Z2 is coming, too..

In less than two weeks' time, Sony Xperia Z1 will be launched in Singapore, and eventually here in the Philippines.  But even before this unit could make its grand entrance, rumors has it that Sony Xperia Z2 is on its way and is scheduled to share the limelight three to six months after the launch of its predecessor.

Will it affect the sales of Sony Xperia Z1?  Certainly, as prospective buyers like me would think twice whether to grab the Z1 once it hits the market or just hold the patience and wait for a few more months for its successor.

This means another decision-making mode for me.  I'm getting tired of this decide-and-dismiss game.. :(

And then there's Z1...

A day after I finally had my eyes fixed (and pockets, too) on the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Sony Xperia Z1 was launched.  Curious on what this new phone has to offer that would make Samsung's sales tremble, I browsed through its features and was totally blown away by its 20.7 megapixel camera.  Whoaa!

It can be recalled in one of my previous posts that I got interested in having a new mobile phone only because I simply wanted to buy a high-resolution camera.  And I thought the 13 megapixel camera of Samsung Galaxy S4 was good enough.. until Sony Xperia Z1 came along..

Gotta have this phone!  Sad to say, I have to wait for it not earlier than next month.  I just read from asia.cnet.com that the Sony Xperia Z1 will be available in Singapore starting October 4 this year.  If only I were in Singapore.. :(

Globe, No Longer An Option

Just when I already decided to get myself a Globe Plan P1,799, I found out that my residential address is not among those covered by Globe's long-term evolution (LTE) service.  I will be transferring to a new residence soon and my inquiry disclosed that even my future location is not covered too.  Too bad, Globe's plan package would have had suited my budget and lifestyle as compared with that of Smart.

It is disappointing to know that Globe is not yet that competitive especially when it comes to internet service.  It does not even offer LTE connection yet for those on prepaid plans and/or light internet users like me who, at times, depend on free wifi signal every time there is a chance to be connected free of charge.

No wonder Smart still dominates the telecommunication industry.  That only means one thing, I have no other choice but to get a Smart plan.  Whether it is a postpaid or a prepaid, that is the question.. :(

Why Not An Iphone?

A year ago, when a colleague bought herself an Iphone 4s, my other colleague remarked that iphone is dubbed as the best mobile phone in the world.  I was not a bit interested.  For me, I agree with what others thought of buying a costly phone as, ridiculous!

But then, things have changed.  I have become a gadget-techie myself.  I blamed it to my HK travel.  And maybe also because of the fact that the phone I'm using right now is screaming for a replacement.  Its keyboards are now hard-headed, as if knowing that it will be passed on to its new owner soon.

Since I was on the mood for buying a new mobile phone, I was thinking, why not the latest phone, for a change?  I guess it is high time for me to splurge.  The brand-conscious freak in me thought of getting an Iphone 5.  But then, googling it helped me decide that I am better off with a Samsung Galaxy S4.

To know why, i suggest you make your own research.. :)

Prepaid? Or Postpaid?

I am now in dilemma., whether to buy the Samsung Galaxy S4, or bundle it with a postpaid plan.  Right now, I am maintaining two separate plans, one for my internet needs and the other for my mobile use.  Good thing, the lock-in periods of both plans have already expired.  Hence, I could terminate my subscriptions anytime I want to.

Now I am thinking, why not get two-in-one package for internet and mobile postpaid plans?  By doing so, I might get the phone I'm aiming for as a freebie.  But then, browsing through the plan builder of Globe and that of Smart, I realized I could not consume the free calls and texts that goes with the plan.  In fact, I have not maximized the unlimited texts that I am getting from current mobile plan.

With that, having a prepaid plan might be a better idea.  In that way, I only get to pay on  what I consume for.  But then, spending P30,000+ for a phone may not be practical for budget-conscious freaks like me.  Now, I'm more confused...

Next question, Globe or Smart? :)

Opting for an S4

Now that I have set my mind into buying a new mobile phone which also coincided with the termination of my subscription contract with Smart Communications, Inc., my next step would be to find a new mobile phone.  When I was in HK, I almost bought a Samsung Galaxy which model and features I didn't bother to care about.  I was just too focused on getting a new phone, as a souvenir from HK.

One thing that held me back from buying that phone, aside from the price, of course, was knowing that someday I will regret shelling out a pretty penny without doing any research at all.  As much as I can, I do not want to buy anything on an impulse.  On the other hand however, I tried to justify that I did not have anymore the luxury of time doing my homework while we were in HK.  Good thing, I still listened to my senses.

I found out that the Samsung Galaxy model (I almost had) has features which specifications are lower than that of the S4, not to mention the poor resolution of its camera.  And that model was bigger than the S4!  I could not imagine myself trying to hold a humongous phone in one hand while taking a call. :(

I'm just thankful that I waited this long. :)

Craving for Mr. Chips!

Now that office is suspended again, I am beginning to get bored as it's been four days that I just stayed home.  I was supposed to make a quick trip to Market! Market! last Saturday for my grocery needs.  And thereafter I planned to go to SM Mall of Asia and Arellano University School of Law for some errands.  However, when it started to rain, I scrapped the idea and decided instead to defer it to another day, and the next day.. and today.. :(

I should have pushed through with my marketing duties.  My vacation grande at home is not complete without munching on my favorite junk food, especially when I'm in the mood for a movie marathon, just like now.  :(

I don't know when my preference for Mr. Chips had started.  I remember few years ago, when my officemate and I went to Batangas for an official business, I brought with me Mr. Chips and shared it with her.  Few weeks thereafter, she admitted to me that Mr. Chips has become her favorite since then.  :)

Right now, I just want to eat Mr. Chips.  Rain, when are you going to stop? :(

Eyeing for a New Mobile Phone

I guess it all started when I yearned for a high-megapixel camera for myself.  I could not even equally reciprocate my colleague's generosity from taking pictures of me while we were having a grand time in Hong Kong.  Our HK memories were beautifully-documented in high-resolution images thanks to her 16-mp Olympus magnificent camera.

No, I was not lost.  I was just talking to a friend over the phone when my colleague took this shot in front of a map at the MTR central station in HK.
Although I had tried to do my share, but my lousy 8-mp camera would barely cooperate at all.  How embarrassing!  I vowed however to properly equip myself for my next travel.  And I mean it!

And not only that, when we took a taxi from the hotel to a friend's house, I let the driver use my phone to talk to my friend and ask for the directions to our destination. He looked at my phone as if it was a Nokia 5110.  I was so amused! Hahaha!

Also, while we were riding a bus going to Admiralty, everyone else was furiously tapping and sliding their fingers on their phones.  Suddenly, my colleague nudged me to take out my phone and compete with them.  And we both giggled in laughter! :)

You see, I am currently using a phone from a non-touchscreen era.  I could even call and text in the middle of a busy street and nobody would dare snatch the phone from me.  Or perhaps, the hold uppers at Cubao would even take pity on me, if not, get the phone and throw it back to me. Whew!

Since I had been planning to buy a new camera and a new mobile phone, I realized I could get the two units in one gadget.  That is, buy a new phone embedded with a high-mp camera.

I was almost at the brink of buying a Samsung Galaxy phone in HK had it not for the very, very limited time that we had.  And I was so haunted by the thought of it even when we were already at the airport to catch for our flight back to Manila, that when I saw the Fortress shop, I literally ran towards it and looked around. Unfortunately, the kuripot in me prevailed, as usual.. Tsk! Tsk!

And it's almost five months since then.  I thought my hunger for a new phone was already a history.  But I was wrong.. Huhuhu

Office Suspended, Indeed!

We just got the good news!  Office suspended effective one o'clock this afternoon.  I can't wait to go home! Since I slept for less than 5 hours last night, I guess I deserve to make up for what I lost. :)

Sunday, August 11, 2013

Office Suspended, Tomorrow?

While others may be sound asleep right now, thanks to the bed weather outside, I am, at present, furiously pounding on the keyboard of my laptop, as if there's no tomorrow.  Yeah, I just wish that there's no tomorrow. :(

I have, not only one, but multiple deadlines to beat tomorrow and I'll be dead if I won't be able to deliver what's kinda expected of me, chuva.  I also have a scheduled appointment to attend to.  Besides, I dread the idea of rushing to/fro work in the midst of a heavy rain.  Talking about nightmares!  Argggh!

I'm waiting for any announcements in connection with typhoon Labuyo.  I'm so exhausted already and all I want to do right now is to drift myself to dreamland.  Good news, where are you???

The Lesson I Learned from Snubbing Citibank Promo..

Actually, I could have gotten more... had I paid particular attention to the text message alert I received from Citibank.  In fact, I just shrugged it off and proceeded to delete it.

You see, I have been having cash purchases for my christmas shopping recently and I get to use the magic card only at shops with that payment facility, including online transactions.  But then in such cases, to avoid confusion especially come payment due dates, I limit my usage to a maximum of 2 credit cards only.. out of 6.  Unfortunately, of those 2, Citibank is not one of them.  :(

Bad move.  Few days ago, I received again a message from Citibank, this time, thanking me for spending at least P2,500 last December 12-18, 2012 and for that, I am now qualified to purchase 1 Purefoods Jamon de Bola for just P2.00.  My first reaction was, Citibank must have sent me the wrong message!  I don't remember using my Citibank card as I did not shop during that period.  But then, I purchased online a Cebu Pacific ticket costing P8,200+ and I didn't think online transactions are included in the promo.

I was wrong.  I was so bothered with that text that I checked online the terms and conditions of the said promo.  And there I found out that online transactions are not among those listed as not qualified for the promo.  Tsk! Tsk!

But then I remember, I made at least 3 more online transactions during that period that could have qualified me for another 3 Jamon de Bola.  My loss.. Well, that is the price that I have to pay for being a snub. Huhuhu!

I hope Citibank has more to offer for its credit card holders in the future.  FYI, to ensure that I won't miss any of its upcoming promo, I just clicked "Like" its FB page.  Hope that helps.  Huhuhu

Thanks Citibank!

I called up Citibank last Monday to request for the reversal of my annual fee of P2,800.  I admit I was nervous because I was unsure if my request will be granted considering that I rarely use my Cebu Pacific card.

I repeatedly asked the customer service representative of what remedies do I have for them to waive the annual fee.  And she politely answered that I have none.. Huhuhu!

Actually, I could afford to lose this card.  What I was worried about, however, is that I might be billed for pretermination fee should I decide to have my card cancelled.. :(

FYI, few months ago, I purchased a travelling bag which I opted to pay for 6 months at zero interest rate charged to my card.  I was thinking, if I let go of my card, I will be forced to pay one time my outstanding balance and worse, the pretermination fee. :(

And there, I took the risk and told the customer service representative that I just want my card cancelled and, I am willing to pay all the outstanding charges except for the annual fee.  After a few agonizing seconds, she finally offered for the reversal of the annual fee.

Yes!  All it takes is to ask and, based on my experience, it was given.. :)

Meatless Monday..

My auditee's BOD recently approved "Meatless Monday", which is in line with its health awareness program for its employees.  Participating canteens are therefore required to prepare meatless menu for its clients every Monday.

Actually, the said program was launched on November 5.  I got my first taste of veggie meat when on that same morning, I decided to have breakfast at the canteen.  I was offered veggie longganiza.  Judging by its appearance and smell, I thought, it must taste good.

Before my mouth started to water, I picked the longganiza with gusto and savored it.  Much to my dismay, it is far from being delectable and, I must add, indescribable.  At that time, I experienced a flashback of my childhood days when my mother forced me to eat something that I extremely did not like and therefore, yucky!  I felt I was going to have a fever then.. :(

Don't get me wrong.  I have nothing against veggie meat.  In fact, I welcome the prospect of patronizing it in the future, for my health's sake.  But then, for now, my appetite is not yet ready to like it.  And I really mean, NOT YET.. ;)

My Ultrabook Review.. the Finale

This is a continuation of my previous post:

Just when I was already resigned to the fact that I might just buy an ultrabook which, for me, is too expensive for its worth, I suddenly came across with Asus Zenbook.

What's good with it is that, it is cheaper than Toshiba.  It costs P59,995.  Its features are comparative with other high-end ultrabooks but then it is made in.. Taiwan!

I have nothing against Asian-made products.  It is just that, well maybe, I am still illiterate as to which manufacturer to trust.  And if the Asus Product Guide (shown below) is to be believed

then, I have nothing to worry about.  The said magazine claims that Asus has the lowest malfunction rate as illustrated in the bar graph shown on the right:

I remember, the first laptop that was assigned to me was an Asus.  It costs around P115,000 then (about 10 years ago).  Don't ask me if it's overpriced as I had nothing to do with its purchase.  I was just too happy and thankful that my former boss entrusted me with the said gadget.  I should say that I did not encounter any problems with it except for its slow speed, which by the way, was common for most computers then.

I was almost convinced and was ready to hand in my credit card when I, out of the blue, changed my mind.  That is, I decided to put off my plans of buying an ultrabook, maybe until the time when the laptop I'm using right now will no longer serve its purpose.  And to keep up with the times, I might have another ultrabook review by then. :)

My Ultrabook Review..

My daily one-week trip to the Central Office earlier this month made me realize that the laptop I was carrying is too heavy for me.  My colleagues advised me to buy a lighter and smaller size instead.  Two of them recommended an HP Pavilion DM which they are currently using.  A senior auditor purchased hers somewhere in the U.S.A which costs around 20 grand in Philippine Peso equivalent.  The other colleague, on the other hand, bought hers for P25k at SM-Cebu.

Somebody suggested a Sony Vaio T series and my recent stroll at SM MOA revealed that I have to shell off P50k for that.  Huh?! That much?!

That's when I was introduced to ultrabooks, an improved version of netbooks.  My online search for the top 10 ultrabooks included the Sony Vaio T series as one of the most affordable unit but equipped only with the basic features as compared to other brands in the market.

Hmm.. not my thing, even if it weighs only at around 1.5kgs.  If I have to invest on something, I have to make sure I get value for my money.  Besides, I have already one with the same brand.  Although I can attest for its good quality, I rather opt to try other competitive brands, for comparison.

And there's Toshiba.  Over the years, it has maintained its reputation for being one of the top brands in the computer industry.  My inquiry at SM Megamall Cyberzone trimmed down my choice between Portege Z930-2002 and Satellite U840W-1000 which, by the way, are priced at P69,990 and P54,990, respectively.  Both contains 3rd generation processor and Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium.  I don't know exactly what that heck means, but as explained to me by the sales rep, it is summed up in 4 words, "it is the latest".
Toshiba Satellite 840W-1000
I was about to choose the cheaper one, as its ultra-wide screen allows simultaneous side-by-side pop up of up to 3 windows (e.g., watching Youtube while busy working on an Excel spreedsheet). But then, I was disappointed with the length which has the same as the netbook's.  Again, not my type..

Which leads me to the more expensive Toshiba ultrabook, the Portege Z930-2002.  It weighs only at around 1.2kgs.  I guess the lightest ultrabook one can find in the market.  However, online reviews disclosed that due to its weight, it is still considered as fragile despite it being advertised as durable.  Hmm.. :(

Philippine's Public Holidays for 2013

I got excited when I learned that Malacanang has recently announced the public holidays for 2013 thru Proclamation No. 459 dated August 16, 2012. I was dismayed however when i found out that Chinese New Year is not among them. :(

As compared to the present year, said event was declared as non-working holiday and if I'm not mistaken, it was on January 25, 2012. But then, the next Chinese New Year, which will be February 10, 2013, falls on a Saturday. Waah!

Needless to say, I guess I won't be able to enjoy the non-working holidays next year as compared to this year.

The Best Credit Card

Just yesterday, I was observing the cash count conducted by the Internal Audit while listening to their conversation about credit cards. I was taken aback when i was suddenly asked which one is the best for me.

Hmm.. Actually, I have at least 7 credit cards. And it is not something to be proud of considering the responsibility that goes with it. In fact, it is damn scary to maintain credit cards that many.

I was planning to let go of about 5 of them. Two of which from HSBC had already expired just early this year. But then, i was offered a deal that i could hardly refuse since the two had been with me for about 8 years already. Also, it is noteworthy to mention that i especially like the convenience of their online banking.

I should say, i guess i'll be with HSBC for a very long time.

Blogging Blues..

I am now blogging thru an ipad app. I have to admit I am still taking baby steps in maximizing its features. Even typing alone using a touch pad is already a burden for me as I was used to having my 10 fingers (not 2, mind you) comfortably tapping on a standard keyboard.

Also, nowadays, I rarely insert images in my posts. The office internet no longer allows it. And I still don't know how to save and edit pictures thru an ipad. Waaah!

Somebody help me, please...

Apple vs Samsung

Just few days ago, Apple was awarded with $1.05B in damages from an infringement suit against Samsung on intellectual property issues over multiple devices.

While I favor various moves to bring down prices of gadgets thru free enterprise, I still believe it is not justifiable enough to illegally copy one's ideas, that is, if it is proven to be true. :(

USB

Just last month, my kitchen faucet broke off which prompted me to take a leave from the office and run to Ace Hardware. Since I also wanted to replace my other kitchen faucet, I decided to buy two faucets at a time. :(

Few days ago, I already knew about the promo offered by Ace Hardware for a free USB with a minimum purchase of P3500. Hence, when I found out that my purchases has accumulated to only P3k, I went back to the shelves and looked for something to spend on just to qualify for a free USB. Alas, after 30 minutes of what I thought to be as an endless searching, I finally settled for two food containers.

When it was my turn to redeem the USB, the kikay in me chose the one with a bulky hammer design over that of a simply slim screw driver. In the advent of terabyte memory gadgets, I was still happy going home with a 4GB stuff in my bag as I know it could keep at least 6 movies that I long to watch about. ;)

Dealing With My Ipad..

After a year of having an ipad, it's only now that I get to enjoy it. Thanks to my recently-subscribed internet connection and recently-bought router, I am now exploring its features as if there's no tomorrow.

But then, embarrassingly ignorant as I obviously am, my exploration is limited yet to downloading free apps e.g., magazines and games. I have yet to discover where to find and how to download free movies, as well as, save my pdf files and pictures, etc.

As a preppy of this gadget, I still have a long way to go. I just hope my impatience won't get in my way towards my journey to learning the intricacies of technology. ;)

Not Another Ondoy Again...

An officemate just texted that work is again suspended, for second consecutive day.  I was ecstatic!  That would mean, I will wake up late again tomorrow morning.  That would mean also that I would just snuggle in bed with hubby while watching a number of movies all day through.

But then, just thinking of the plight of our fellowmen who are now suffering from the ravages of this so-called natural phenomenon, I felt a rash of guilt.  It was selfish of me to think only of myself in the midst of this crisis.  In fact, at 3 o'clock this morning, I witnessed my neighbors who kept on vigil at the possibility of floodwaters seeping through their units.

I felt so helpless.  For now, what I can only do is to offer prayers for the safety of everyone..

Work Suspended on July 31?

I woke up to a rainy Monday early this morning.  I immediately decided not to report to office and thus, I thereafter notified my officemates, and before I realized it, I was already literally sound asleep.

Few hours after, the rain stopped.  I then wondered if I just made the wrong decision.  But then, it was too late to change my mind, dress myself, and go to work.  It was already 2pm!

At around 230pm, an officemate texted that work had just been declared suspended.  True enough, my google search confirmed the text message.  I was happy, alright.  But my happiness was short-lived..

I was bugged by the question, why only at 230pm?  The government should have declared the suspension of work at the beginning of the day when everybody else is still safely tucked at home.  What if something bad had happened this morning, say, flood?  And since the government was not prompt enough to declare suspension of work, consequently, many workers would have been stranded on the streets!

Oh my!  I shudder at the thought everytime I remember what had happened to me on the day typhoon Ondoy struck Metro Manila.  It was a nightmare!  I walked for maybe a 5-km stretch of C5 Road.  And it was raining cats and dogs.  And I bravely (but stupidly) crossed floodwaters just to reach home.  And I promised never to do it again..

That explains why I would rather prefer to be cuddled in bed than be marked "full service" in the attendance report.  My question now is, what about tomorrow? :)

What went wrong?

I wish I knew the answer..

Recent news have shocked hollywood ... First, it was Tom and Katie, now it's Robert and Kristen and Rupert Sanders.  I am neither a fan of the Twilight Saga nor of the Snow White and the Huntsman.  But the scandal that rocked these popular stars was more than enough for me to rouse from my hibernation.  Besides, hubby is a big fan of Kristen because of her beautiful nose.  And I'm jealous!  As much as I hate her for that fact, I guess I just have to write my point of view.. in her defense.

I feel sorry for Robert.  He must be extremely devastated.  Obviously, he is a victim.  Being betrayed is excruciatingly painful.  Take it from me.  Been there.  But sometimes, things happen for a reason.  Blessings in disguise, so they say.  And I agree.

Rupert Sanders, being a married man at that, and who is expected to be already mature at his age, is the person to blame in this whole brouhaha.  He has a gorgeous wife, Liberty Ross, a British vogue model, and they have two beautiful children.  How could he do such foolishness to his family?!  And he took advantage of the vulnerability of a 22-year old lass.  Tsk!  Tsk!

A law against philandering husbands should be proposed and strictly implemented.  How's that?

I Will Miss the Sale...

Each year, I always look forward for the sale of SM Mall of Asia.  (Please see my last year's post on this by clicking this link.)

My most-awaited sale usually falls sometime between March and April, as well as, September and October.  Unfortunately, I won't be around.  :( I have a one-week seminar to attend at a far-away place somewhere at Commonwealth, Quezon City. :(

No, I don't consider myself a shopaholic.  However, when I was watching last night some scenes of the movie, Confessions of a Shopaholic, I begin to wonder, maybe I am one.. But I have to qualify, I still consider myself a certified kuripot.  I just go gaga when I find at the mall things that I like at a discounted price.

I'm so sad.  But I guess, I'll find a way. ;)

Energy Power Saver Is Not Effective!

I paid my MERALCO dues just two days ago, but not before I noticed that it was my lowest bill ever.  This now contradicts my claim which was previously posted in this blog that my November 2011 bill was my lowest.

In that post, I mentioned that starting January 2012, I won't be using my Extreme Power Saver anymore just to test if it is really working.  True enough, I did unplug the device and look, my February bill, which showed a 51-kwh consumption, approximates my September and October 2011 dues.  Also, my March bill further plummeted down to 34-kwh consumption.

Without the Extreme Power Saver, my electric consumption should have increased.  But my MERALCO bills for the past two months however showed otherwise.

I swear I did not try to do something to save on power cost.  In fact, for the past few weeks, I have been using the refrigerator more often than the usual.  Although I had been on training and was away home for almost two weeks, I was also not home for exactly two weeks when my power consumption dropped to 36 kwhs in November last year.

Now, will somebody just explain to me what went wrong?  Or if nobody cared enough, maybe, I would just simply conclude that, I have just fell prey to another false marketing strategy and therefore the Extreme Power Saver indeed is not effective.. :(

Watch? Or Cellphone?

I'm not fond of wristwatches (that may be the reason why almost all of my time pieces were given to me, a.k.a. donated).  Hence, when I was asked by Eastwest Bank to choose between a wristwatch and cellphone (as their freebie for a new credit card), I immediately opted for the latter.

Just this morning, I finally received my new credit card.  Attached with it was a voucher (see image on the right) that says, I may claim either a Timex Marathon T5K367 wristwatch or a Samsung E1080 cellphone.

The wristwatch looks cute.  As I wondered how much is its cost in the market, I then googled for Timex Philippines and found the contact number of its branch nearest my office, at SM Mall of Asia.  The person I talked to asked me first if I was referring to the Eastwest credit card promo before answering my inquiry.  Accordingly, the watch is priced at P2260+.

Since I already knew that the phone sells at around P1200, I begin to doubt whether the Timex man was telling the truth.  If the watch was indeed priced at P2260+, then why a big price disparity between the cost of two freebie items?

If you were asked to choose between a valuable item and a less-valuable item, common sense would tell you to take the former, wouldn't you?  To solve the problem, I inquired the phone's market value online and found this:
It does not however include shipping fees.  But then, I still wonder..

I guess I will just have to go to the mall and verify it myself before making a decision between - a wristwatch or a cellphone. :)

Post-valentine Moment

Despite my busy schedule, yesterday, I finally had the chance to watch again one of my favorite movies, The Notebook.  If I'm not mistaken, I first watched it at the big screen, with ex-hubby.  Come to think of it, I watched a romance movie with an unromantic companion.  Sad fact... :(

But that did not hinder me from going gaga over this movie. Here are some of its memorable quotes:
"So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. We're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What's it look like? If it's with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that's what you really wanted. But don't you take the easy way out."
"My Dearest Allie. I couldn't sleep last night because I know that it's over between us. I'm not bitter anymore, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I'll smile at you with joy and remember how we spent the summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that's what you've given me. That's what I hope to give to you forever. I love you. I'll be seeing you. Noah"
What struck me most was the final scene wherein Noah did not leave Ally and even joined her to her death..

Truly two thumbs up for this movie..

Harassed by a Credit Card CSR..

It first happened just two months ago - December 4, 2011 to be exact.  I got this call from a certain Alvin Paredes of Collections Department demanding payment from me for an allegedly unsettled bill from my Citibank credit card.  He was so arrogant that up to this day, every time I recall those incidents, I would clench my fist in anger.  (Actually, I rather prefer a hair-grabbing match with Mr. Paredes)

Accordingly, my previous requests for reversal of surcharges were disapproved, hence, I still have unpaid balance even if I already had my credit card closed.  I asked, how could that be?  My card was deactivated for more than three months already and during those period, nobody called me about my unsettled bill, knowing Citibank's reputation for being too aggressive in their collection efforts.

I should know this aggressiveness because I already witnessed my officemates being bullied and threatened over the phone by these collection agents.  But that's another story...

Don't get me wrong.  Citibank, is one of the few companies that I highly recommend for those who intend to get a credit card because of their perks and privileges.  In fact, I blogged (click this link) about that irresistible offer that I now regret I didn't grab. :(

Further, of all the credit card companies that I transact with, only Citibank would take the time to call me few days after my due date (talking again about aggressiveness..) to remind me should I fail to pay on time.  That again, is another story.  But let me explain briefly, lest some negative conclusions might be formed.  I usually don't receive my bills from Citibank.  I would know that I have dues at such date only when I get a call from Citibank.  Such an inconvenience..  Tsk! Tsk!

Below is what remains of my poor memory of my conversation with Mr. Paredes, which goes something like this:

Paredes:  Gusto ko lang naman malaman kung magbabayad ka o hindi.
Me:  Bakit ako magbabayad?  Hindi ko nga alam na may unpaid bill pa pala ako.  Tsaka, ang tagal ko na pina-close ang credit card ko.
Paredes:  Ok.  Pero inform lang kita, tatawag uli ako sa'yo dyan in the next few days.

Considering that he would be bombarding me with his calls, I told him to contact me thru my cellphone instead of office phone.  He said he can't.

One reason why I would want Mr. Paredes to call me thru my mobile phone instead of the office phone is that, I do not want anybody in the office complaining why I spend so much time on the office phone for my personal business.  But actually, the more important reason behind is that, I could record on my cellphone all the snide remarks he made and perhaps make a formal complaint about it.

And yes, Mr. Paredes was so true to his word, he called me up many times again, and yes, thru my office phone, with the obvious malicious intention of embarrassing me to my officemates.  You can just imagine what I went through.  Grrr!

About two weeks later, I got another call from Citibank, fortunately, it was not Mr. Paredes.  Bad thing, I was not able to get his name.  He was polite while talking to me.  He even apologized for the behavior of Mr. Paredes.  Everything went on smoothly while we were discussing about the details of my dues.  (Mr. Paredes, why can't you do that?)  Later, it was found out that my due was only P427.50 and not P2000+, as previously demanded.

Today, weeks after payment of P427.50 (imagine, I was being harassed for not paying this amount.  I must be poor, Mr. Paredes!), I got this bill showing that I overpaid in the amount of P1,939.12:

Tsk! Tsk!  again..

Bourne Legacy Madness

I thought I would not have been affected at all by the Bourne Legacy brouhaha.  But then just this morning, as I was already on my way to the office, the heavy traffic took me years before I was able to pass by Pasay Taft-Rotonda wherein I saw at least two trailer trucks parked infront of Metropoint Mall.  I later learned that it cause the traffic to stretch all the way to Timog area.

It was reported over DZMM that the schedule shoot would still be during the weekend yet.  But as early as today, the crew was already busy setting up the area.  And accordingly, they did not inform the MMDA.  I don't know if I heard it right but it was said that as a consequence, they were forced to pack up.

And I hope so.  Although I would have wanted to catch a glimpse of Rachel Weisz and get a feel of Hollywood craze, still, I don't want to go to office for the next two days spending at least 15-30 minutes more on the road. Anyway, good luck to me. :(
